Natural Analogs for Geologic Storage of CO2: An Integrated Global Research Program

چکیده

Coordinated research efforts are underway on three continents (North America, Europe, Australia) to study naturally occurring carbon dioxide deposits, in order to address fundamental questions and concerns about the long-term storage of CO2 in geologic formations. Natural accumulations of carbon dioxide exist in many geologic basins. Some deposits are stored in secure and impermeable traps, whereas others are unstable and leaking. These deposits provide unique “natural analogs” for the various options of storing CO2 in geologic formations, including injection of CO2 into depleted oil and gas fields and saline formations. Our research programs comprise an integrated analysis of the geologic, engineering, safety, and economic aspects of natural analogs. How long can CO2 be stored underground? What are the long-term effects of CO2 on reservoir and cap rock systems, and in particular what evidence exists for mineralogical changes indicating formation of stable minerals? If the CO2 leaks similarly to many hydrocarbon accumulations, where does it go, how fast and what are the effects both in the subsurface and at the surface? What reservoir screening methods can be developed to high-grade geologic sequestration candidate sites? What are the low-cost and safe engineering techniques already developed by the CO2 production industry that could be adapted for geologic storage? These and other fundamental issues will be evaluated to address scientific and public interest about the safety and efficacy of the geologic storage of CO2.

Integrated collaborative technology development program for CO2 sequestration in geologic formations––United States Department of Energy R&D

A major contributor to increased atmospheric CO2 levels is fossil fuel combustion. Roughly one third of the carbon emissions in the United States comes from power plants. Since electric generation is expected to grow and fossil fuels will continue to be the dominant fuel source, there is growing recognition that the energy industry can be part of the solution to reducing greenhouse gas emission...

OTC Paper Number OTC-21987-PP Carbon Capture and Sequestration: The U.S. Department of Energy’s R&D Efforts to Characterize Opportunities for Deep Geologic Storage of Carbon Dioxide in Offshore Resources

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is the lead federal agency for the research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) of carbon sequestration technologies. This effort is being implemented through several activities, including applied research and development (R&D), demonstration projects, and technical support to loan guarantee and tax incentives programs. Hyperspectral Remote Sensing for Geologic Carbon Sequestration Field Monitoring

In order to constrain the growth of atmospheric CO2, Geologic Carbon Sequestration (GCS) has been proposed as one “clean coal” technology for mitigating the more extreme impacts of global warming. An important issue to ensure the successful storage of carbon dioxide in geologic sequestration sites is the ability to monitor these sites for possible leakage. More understanding of CO2 storage proc...

A Multi-Pollutant Framework for Evaluating CO2 Control Options for Fossil Fuel Power Plants

As part of DOE/NETL’s Carbon Sequestration Program, we are developing an integrated, multi-pollutant modeling framework to evaluate the costs and performance of alternative carbon capture and sequestration technologies for fossil-fueled power plants. The model calculates emissions, costs, and efficiency on a systematic basis at the level of an individual plant or facility. Both new and existing...

The Liability of Carbon Dioxide Storage

This research examines the liability of storing CO2 in geological formations. There is a potential tortious and contractual liability exposure if stored CO2 is not fully contained by the geological formation. Using a combination of case study and survey methods, this research examines the risks confronted by CO2 storage, the legal and regulatory regimes governing these risks, and liability arra...
